The Nucleus Breeder Herd

At the heart of our operations is the Nucleus Breeder Herd. This hand-selected group of cattle serves as the genetic foundation for our entire livestock program.

  • Local & Regional Impact: By maintaining a high-standard breeder herd, we aim to roll out enhanced genetics not just within our own borders, but into the local community and eventually on a national and regional scale.
  • Selection for Excellence: Our breeding program focuses on hardiness, growth rates, and carcass quality, ensuring that Balu-bred genetics thrive in the Southern African environment.

Tech-Driven Growth: Reproductive Innovation

Balu is positioning itself as a hub of agricultural innovation through our Advanced Livestock Reproductive Centre. We believe that technology is the key to accelerating the improvement of Zimbabwean livestock.

  • IVF & Embryo Transfer: By implementing In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Embryo Transfer (ET) technologies, we can rapidly multiply the offspring of our highest-performing cows.
  • Rapid Genetic Gain: These advanced methods allow us to achieve in a few years what traditional breeding would take decades to accomplish, positioning Balu as a leader in precision livestock farming.

Regional Animal Health & Community Partnership

Balu’s commitment to livestock extends beyond our estate fences. We believe that a healthy regional herd benefits the entire agricultural ecosystem.

  • Satellite Health Centers: We are developing satellite livestock health centers in the regions surrounding Balu to deliver essential veterinary care and health management.
  • Building Relationships: Through these centers, we provide local producers with the tools, training, and care needed to enhance the quality of their own cattle.
  • Value Addition: By helping local farmers improve the health of their herds, we facilitate the production of better quality, higher-valued products for the Zimbabwean market.

Integrated Feedlot & Fodder Production

Sustainability at Balu is driven by integration. Our cattle program “dovetails” perfectly with our intensive cropping operations to create a self-sustaining cycle of growth.

  • 65 * 64.8 Commercial Feedlot: We operate a 750-unit commercial feedlot program, focusing on efficiency and animal welfare to produce a high-valued end product.
  • The Lucerne Backbone: To support this, we have developed intensive lucerne crops under pivot irrigation. Starting with 40 hectares and expanding to 200 hectares, this high-protein fodder provides the nutritional foundation required for our feedlot and breeder programs.
  • Optimised Grazing: Our program utilises background grazing and irrigated pastures to ensure steers and long-weaners reach peak condition before entering the market.
